Description: On May 6, 1937, tragedy struck with the Hindenburg disaster, an airship accident that occurred in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. The LZ 129 Hindenburg was a German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, which was the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume. Built and designed by the Zeppelin Company, it was operated by the German Zeppelin Airline Company and named after Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, the former President of Germany who had passed away in 1934. During an attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, the Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed. The tragic accident claimed the lives of 35 people, including 13 passengers and 22 crew members on board, as well as one person on the ground, out of the 97 individuals who were on the airship during the disaster.
