Description: The iconic photograph, "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima," depicts six United States Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the final stages of the Pacific War's Battle of Iwo Jima. Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press captured the image on February 23, 1945. The photograph was published in Sunday newspapers just two days later and went on to appear in thousands of publications. It became the first photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication. The image was used as the basis for the Marine Corps War Memorial, sculpted by Felix de Weldon in 1954 to honor all Marines who had died in service since 1775. The memorial is located near the Ord-Weitzel Gate to Arlington National Cemetery and the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington Ridge Park. In the United States, the photograph is widely regarded as one of the most significant and recognizable images of World War II.
